Temporary Suspension of Examination Requirement
For Qualified Conventional Onsite Sewage System Installer License Applicants
During its 2012 Session, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law to temporarily suspend the examination requirement for qualified individuals seeking initial licensure as a conventional onsite sewage system installer.
The four year window to obtain licensure without passing the written test begins July 1, 2012, and ends July 1, 2016. In order to qualify for the exam waiver, an applicant must:
- Demonstrate to the WWWOOSSP Board's satisfaction that he has been actively engaged in performing the duties of a conventional installer for at least eight of the 12 years immediately preceding his date of application; and
- Meet one of the specific entry requirements established in the WWWOOSSP Board's regulations at 18VAC160-20-97.C.1.
Applicants who meet the above criteria may apply for the conventional onsite sewage system installer license by submitting a completed application (PDF) and fee. Individuals who fail to submit the application and fee by June 30, 2016, will be required to provide documentation of their experience or competency and pass a Board-approved examination.
NOTE: Individuals who install conventional or alternative onsite sewage systems must be licensed or work under the supervision of the licensed onsite sewage system installer responsible for the installation project. The licensed onsite sewage system installer must:
- Hold a valid contractor license with the sewage disposal system (SDS) specialty issued by the Virginia Board for Contractors; or
- Work under the direct supervision of a licensed SDS contractor or be employed full-time by the licensed SDS contractor that signed the installation contract.
